Learn basic French for Le Puy Route

Before you embark on Le Puy Route in France we recommend you learn some basic French phrases. This will be a valuable tool in making your trip along the Camino more pleasant, especially in rural areas where English isn’t much spoken. It could be considered rude to expect French people to speak English. So why not embrace your travels and learn a few key phrases.   • No – Non
  • Please – S’il vous plait
  • Thanks – Merci
  • How are things? – Ça va?
  • Hello! How are you? – Salut! Comment vas-tu?
  • Good day / evening / night – Bonne journée / Bonne soirée / Bonne nuit
  • Goodbye! Until later – Au revoir! A plus tard!

Excuse me! – Veuillez m’excuser!

  • What did you say – Comment dîtes-vous?
  • Do you understand? – Avez-vous compris?
  • I don’t understand! – Je ne comprends pas
  • I speak very little French – Je parle un peu Français
  • Do you speak English? – Parles tu anglais?
  • How do you pronounce that? – Comment cela se prononce-t-il?
  • Please write it down – Écris le moi s’il te plait

Where is it? – Ou est-ce?

  • Here – Ici
  • There – La bas
  • On the left – A gauche
  • On the right – A droite
  • Outside the bank – En dehors de la banque
  • Beside the cafe – A côté du café
  • Near the centre – Près du centre
  • Opposite the market – En face du marché
  • Where are the toilets – Ou sont les toilettes?
  • Where do I get the taxi to the airport? – Ou puis-je prendre un taxi pour l’aéroport?

  • It’s midday – Il est midi
  • Today – Aujourd’hui
  • Yesterday – Hier
  • Tomorrow – Demain
  • Day after tomorrow – Après demain
  • Last week – La semaine dernière
  • This month – Ce mois ci
  • Do you have any vacancies? – Avez-vous une chambre de libre?
  • I’d like a room for one night – Je voudrai une chambre pour une nuit
  • There’s a problem with the room – Il y a un problème avec la chambre
  • It’s too hot (cold) – Il fait très froid (chaud)
  • There is no hot water – Il n’y a pas d’eau chaude
  • Where can I wash my clothes – Ou est-ce que je peux laver mes vêtements?
  • I need a dentist (doctor) -J’ai besoin d’un dentiste (médecin)
  • Where is the health centre? – Ou se trouve le centre de santé?
  • I have blisters – J’ai des ampoules
  • I have a tendinitis – J’ai une tendinite
  • My leg / knee / foot / toe½. hurts – Ma jambe / genou / doigt de pied½. Me fait mal
  • My ankle is swollen – Ma cheville est enflée
  • My lower back is in spasm – J’ai une contracture en bas du dos
  • Where is the pharmacy? – Ou se trouve la pharmacie?

Food – Nourriture

  • Breakfast – Petit déjeuner
  • Lunch – Déjeuner
  • Meat – Viande
  • Lamb – Agneau
  • Ham – Jambon
  • Chicken – Poulet
  • Fish – Poisson
  • Seafood – Fruits de mer
  • Vegetables -Légumes

  • Red Wine – Vin rouge
  • White Wine – Vin blanc

  • Milk – Lait
  • Is there a vegetarian restaurant? – Y a t-il un restaurant végétarien?
