The scenic St Francis Way walk will take you through il cuor verde d’Italia, the green heart of Italy, visiting sites that are connected the saint himself. He is the patron saint of Italy, animals, ecology and merchants, and lead a fascinating life. You will go via Assisi, the home of the saint, and end in the classic and Eternal City of Rome.

Pilgrimages to Rome have been happening for centuries. However, unlike the Via Francigena, there is no historical text to follow on this walking holiday. There are a number of routes to walk that are linked with the life of St Francis. For this trip, we have selected sites that are connected with his life, whilst enabling you to enjoy the beauty of the Apennine mountain range.

The region you will walk through has a rich and colourful history and architecture. You will witness how humans and nature have come to live in harmony here, in the spirit of St Francis.  The St Francis Way is a scenic and historic walk. Connect to nature and find your rhythm as you walk this fantastic route through Italy.

Beginning in Florence, the first section of St. Francis Way will take you through rolling Tuscan hills and valleys. Don’t miss the opportunity to capture the serenity of the lush countryside, enjoy a variety of local Italian cuisine, or the chance to visit the most revered location of Santuario della Verna, a Francisan sanctuary located atop Mount Penna.

Gentle rolling hills will see you through this section with some longer days that are manageable due to terrain.

The trip begins in Assisi, home of St Francis, and will lead you on a captivating tour of Umbria and parts of Lazio. This section of the tour includes a stop at Rieti, the site of the ‘Miracle of Wine’ where St Francis miraculously doubled the crop of local vineyards in the 13 Century. So, it only makes sense that you sit back and enjoy a wonderful Colli della Sabina D.O.C. wine.

This final section of the St Francis Way takes you from the Apennine mountain range down into the fertile Tiber Valley plain along quiet tree-lined paths. Eventually, you will be leaving behind the remote Italian countryside as you arrive into the busy outer-suburbs of Rome and head for the final destination: the historic Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican City.
