At Follow the Camino, sustainability is a long-term commitment that demands continuous monitoring and improvement. Below, you’ll find the certifications we hold, the global commitments we’ve signed, and the initiatives we run ourselves — each held to a different standard of verification.

Internally, we track our carbon footprint annually using Zoho Analytics, recording emissions across accommodation and transfers. The results are reviewed by our CEO each year.

Certifications

Our B-Corporation Certification

Follow the Camino is B Corp certified. B Corp certification is awarded by B Lab to companies that meet rigorous verified standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. It means a company has been independently assessed across five areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.

Our current score is 89.1. In 2026 we are undergoing recertification, which will give us the opportunity to review our progress and raise the bar further.

For us, certification is not an endpoint. It is a framework that keeps us honest about where we stand and where we still have work to do.

Leave No Trace Ireland

Follow the Camino has been a Bronze member of Leave No Trace Ireland for several years. Leave No Trace is Ireland’s outdoor ethics education programme, built around seven principles for responsible outdoor recreation — from planning ahead and disposing of waste properly, to respecting wildlife and being considerate of others. We incorporate these principles into our local training walks in Ireland, sharing them with clients who join us.

Global Commitments

United Nations Global Compact

Since 2019, Follow the Camino has been a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, committing to its Ten Principles across Human Rights, Labour Standards, Environment, and Anti-Corruption. We report on our progress annually through our Communication on Progress (CoP).

Our 2026 CoP covers all four pillars: on the environment side, measuring our Scope 3 emissions, our Climate Action Plan (2026–2029), and supplier engagement; on labour and human rights, our JEDI initiatives, inclusive hiring, and employee wellbeing; and on anti-corruption, our Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy with confidential whistleblower reporting channels.

In 2024, we signed the EU Commission Sustainable Consumption Pledge, joining a network of companies committed to more sustainable business practices, including companies such as Capgemini, Decathlon, and Philips.

Our Own Initiatives

UN World Food Programme

Since 2014, we have donated €10 per month per employee to the UN World Food Programme. The WFP works to deliver food assistance and support food security in crisis-affected communities around the world. It is a small but consistent contribution that we have maintained every year.

Our carbon credit partnerships

We have purchased and retired carbon credits from certified climate projects through two partners. These projects support renewable energy, clean water and cleaner cooking in local communities. Here is exactly what we have retired, year by year.

2020 to 2023: through First Climate
Approximately 3,000 tCO₂e retired (2020: 50, 2021: 250, 2022: 1,250, 2023: 1,450), from three Gold Standard-certified projects:

Wind power in Karnataka, India, generating renewable electricity for the local grid in place of fossil fuel-based power.
Spouts safe water project, Uganda, providing clean water through locally made ceramic filters and reducing the fuelwood used to boil water.
Solar PV in India, generating clean electricity to reduce reliance on coal-fired power.

2024: through DGB Group
Approximately 1,350 tCO₂e retired:

Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project, Kenya, distributing improved cookstoves that reduce fuelwood use and indoor air pollution. [confirm certification standard]

2025: through DGB Group and First Climate
Approximately 1,450 tCO₂e retired:

Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project, Kenya (approximately 650 tCO₂e).
Improved Cookstoves for Social Impact in Ugandan Communities, Gold Standard (approximately 800 tCO₂e), providing households with cleaner, more efficient cookstoves.

Earthology

In 2023, Follow the Camino partnered with Earthology to provide Carbon Literacy Certification to our team. The programme covers the basics of carbon and climate change and how individual and organisational decisions contribute to emissions. Employees who completed the course received Earthology’s Carbon Literacy Certification.

Recent Response: Nepal Floods

Lately, the world has felt different. The climate is changing faster than we expected, phenomena like El Niño are disrupting entire seasons, and disasters like the floods in Nepal remind us how quickly the things we take for granted can change.

At Follow the Camino, we accompany people step by step, on a journey that often means much more than simply reaching a destination. This time, we wanted to accompany a different kind of journey: that of communities rebuilding their lives after losing so much.

We are donating to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the emergency response to the floods in Nepal and the communities affected as they begin to recover and rebuild.

Because every journey has difficult moments, and we believe no one should have to face them alone.

Excellent Camino Planning Experience — Perfect Father-Daughter Trip This was my second time using Follow The Camino, and once again they did an excellent job. I worked closely with Larissa, who was exceptional from start to finish. She was responsive, thoughtful, organized, and truly went above and beyond to help create a very special trip. I planned this Camino as a graduation gift for my 22-year-old daughter, and it turned out to be the perfect father-daughter experience. The planning before the hike was excellent. Larissa and the Follow The Camino team helped us think through the right route, the daily mileage, the hotel choices, luggage transfers, and the overall flow of the trip. Everything was well organized and very smooth, which allowed us to simply enjoy the walk, the towns, the time together, and the experience. What stood out most was how personal the service felt. This was not just a basic travel booking. Larissa understood that this trip was meaningful for my daughter and me, and she helped make it feel special. She even arranged a bottle of champagne for my daughter’s birthday during the Camino, which was a very thoughtful touch and something we really appreciated. The lodging and routing worked very well. Some of the properties were especially memorable, including our first hotel in Sarria, the Rectoral de Lestedo near Palas de Rei, and A Quinta da Auga in Santiago. The final hotel and spa in Santiago were a perfect way to end the Camino. The luggage transfers, hotel arrangements, and daily logistics all worked smoothly. The way the itinerary was structured was also excellent. We had one longer walking day near the end, which allowed us to have a much shorter final day into Santiago. That gave us time to arrive early, receive our Compostela certificates quickly, enjoy the hotel and spa, attend Pilgrim Mass, and celebrate the completion of the Camino without feeling rushed. I would highly recommend Follow The Camino to anyone considering the Camino de Santiago, especially if you want the experience to be well planned, comfortable, and supported by people who really understand the route. Larissa was outstanding, and I am very grateful for the care and attention she put into our trip. It was a wonderful experience and a perfect graduation gift and father-daughter trip.

I recently completed 117km of the Camino de Santiago, Frances, from Sarria to Santiago. This was part of a fundraising challenge for a local charity, who used Follow the Camino to coordinate the trip. I was hugely impressed with every aspect of the trip. I wasn’t involved with the booking, which the charity made on our behalf, but once the booking was made the information provided by Follow the Camino was excellent. We were given details about the route, the hotels, the luggage transfers, what to bring and suggested training to ensure an adequate fitness level. We were offered a pre-departure Zoom meeting and there was an app that also included all the details together with an interactive GPS map. There was also a 24 hour emergency number. I was very happy with the high level of service and would absolutely use Follow the Camino again for a future trip

My friend and I just had a very good experience hiking from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Pamplona across the Pyrenees, organised by the team at Follow the Camino. We took advantage of their option to have our luggage taken to our next night stay every day. It was an extremely smooth operation and we were grateful for it been taken care of. All places we stayed were great. People were welcoming and helpful, rooms were immaculate, breakfast and dinners offered plenty of food (tasty both at breakfast and dinner). The path is sign-posted and easy to follow, even in the fog. The walk across the Pyrenees is a physical challenge though. However, we managed and so did all the lovely people we met along our way.
