Authorities at the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela have announced that all religious services, with the exception of a parish mass in a side chapel, will be suspended for 12 months while the 11th century, UNESCO World Heritage Site undergoes interior restoration.

However, due to planned restoration works, Pilgrim Masses will be now be held at the nearby Church of St Francis. Authorities have commented that great efforts will be made to ensure the same pilgrim mass atmosphere is present at the new location while restoration works take place.

Good news, though! Visitors can still enter the cathedral to visit the relics of St. James if they wish.

This recent restoration project comes after a massive clean of the exterior of the building, which saw scaffolding obstructing the view of the Cathedral for nearly five years, up until July 2018.
