What’s in Your Daypack? How to Pack the Perfect Daily Bag for the Camino de Santiago

You don’t need to carry your life on your back to walk the Camino. In fact, if you book with Follow the Camino, your main luggage is transferred for you—so all you need to worry about is your daily bag. Light, purposeful, and ready for anything.

But what exactly goes into a smart Camino daypack? Here’s everything you’ll want to bring—and what you’re better off leaving behind.

Why is your daypack so important?

Because it’s your lifeline between towns. For hours, all you’ll have is what’s on your back—so every item needs to earn its place. The perfect Camino daypack is light, comfortable, and filled only with what you truly need to enjoy the walk without extra weight dragging you down.

This isn’t about over-preparation. It’s about freedom through simplicity.

What kind of bag should I bring?

Look for a 10-20L backpack with:

  • Good back ventilation (you’ll sweat, even in spring)

  • Chest and waist straps (for better weight distribution)

  • Easy-access side pockets (for your water bottle or phone)

  • A hydration system if you prefer a water bladder over bottles

Try it out on a few walks at home before you go. Adjust the straps. Get used to its feel. Trust us—you’ll be glad you did.

What goes inside the perfect Camino daypack?

Here’s your Camino-tested checklist:

  • Pilgrim passport (credencial) – get that stamp at every stop!
  • Cash – small towns don’t always accept cards.
  • Phone & charger or power bank – for maps, photos, emergencies.
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, ibuprofen, antiseptic wipes.
  • Water – at least 1–1.5 L. Dehydration is sneaky. Sip often.
  • Snacks – think trail mix, energy bars, fruit. Or pick up local cheese and bread.
  • Sunscreen – apply and reapply, even on cloudy days.
  • Hat and sunglasses – shade is precious on long exposed stretches.
  • Light rain jacket or poncho – weather shifts quickly in Galicia.
  • Blister kit – a few Compeed patches can save your whole day.
  • Toilet paper or tissues – the countryside doesn’t come with amenities.
  • Notebook or journal – because the Camino will make you reflect.
  • Face mask & hand sanitizer – still useful in some hostels or chapels.
  • Light scarf or buff – sun, wind, dust, or style—your choice.

Should I pack extra clothes?

Not in your daypack. Leave the outfit changes in your transferred luggage. But one exception is worth noting: a spare pair of socks. Fresh, dry socks can save you from blisters and bad moods.

How heavy should it be?

Aim for no more than 10% of your body weight. That means around 4–6 kg for most people, but ideally even less. If you’re questioning whether to bring it—leave it out. On the Camino, less is more. Every gram counts after 10 km.

Final tips from experienced pilgrims:

  • Don’t skip training walks with your daypack—full and loaded.

  • Pack and repack until everything has its place.

  • Use dry bags or ziplocks to organize and waterproof your gear.

  • Stay adaptable—your daily needs may change, and that’s OK.

One last thing…

Packing your day bag isn’t just about gear. It’s a ritual—a way of asking yourself: What do I really need today? The Camino teaches you that you don’t need much to feel free, safe, and alive.

So keep it light. Keep it intentional. And walk your Camino with confidence.
