It was first described in the first-ever guidebook (Codex Calixtinus) in the 12th century. Since then, it has attracted millions of walkers, making it the most popular Camino route. It has also inspired countless artists, writers, and filmmakers – including Paulo Coelho in his bestselling book The Pilgrimage, and the 2010 Hollywood film The Way starring Martin Sheen. The route traditionally begins in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a charming town in southern France, and travels across the Pyrenees and through the scenic landscapes of northern Spain, ending at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, the final resting place of St. James the Apostle.
How long and difficult is the Camino Frances?
The Camino Frances stretches for approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles). It offers a variety of terrains, from the moderate mountain passes of the Pyrenees, to the rolling vineyards of La Rioja, and the vast plains of Castile and León, before reaching the lush and hilly region of Galicia. Anyone in reasonable shape can walk a section of the French Way, ranging from 5 to 35 walking days. The most popular option is the final 100 km into Santiago.For those looking to extend their journey—or even walk the entire route—it typically takes 30 to 35 walking days to complete on foot, excluding rest days (which we highly recommend).
What are the most popular Camino Frances routes?
Because time and budget are often limited, many pilgrims choose to walk the final 100 kilometers (technically 115 km) from Sarria to Santiago—completing the journey in a week. This is the minimum distance required to earn the Compostela certificate.If you have more time and a larger budget, walking the full route from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago is an iconic and rewarding experience that covers the entire Camino Francés.
