ETIAS 2023: Europe’s New Travel Authorization System

The Camino de Santiago, with its deep historical roots and rising global interest, continues to draw travelers from every corner of the world. As Europe embraces an increasing number of visitors, the introduction of the ETIAS travel authorization in 2024 emerges as a significant development.

Designed to enhance security while ensuring a streamlined travel experience, ETIAS is set to be a significant change in the travel for previous 60 visa exempt countries. Here’s what you need to know about the program and how to apply for it!

ETIAS in a Nutshell

What is ETIAS? ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorization System. Designed as a new entry requirement, this authorisation will be mandatory for over 1.4 billion people from 60 visa-exempt countries looking to venture into any of the 26 European countries covered under this system.

Validity: Once obtained, ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever happens first. Remember, a new passport means you’ll need a new ETIAS authorisation.

Purpose: The ETIAS system is in place for short-term visits, covering stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day window. Still, travellers should be aware that possession of an ETIAS does not guarantee entry – final decisions rest with the border officials.

Understanding ETIAS Eligibility Based on Country Groups

Travel to Europe comes with specific requirements based on one’s country of origin.

  • Firstly, for countries within the European Union (EU), residents enjoy the privilege of free movement, meaning they do not require a visa or an ETIAS authorisation to traverse the member states.
  •  Secondly, there’s a set of countries outside the EU that, while visa-exempt for Schengen Zone visits, will need to obtain an ETIAS authorisation starting in 2024. These travelers were previously allowed entry with just their passport but will soon need the added ETIAS clearance.
  • Lastly, the third group consists of countries that need a Schengen visa for entry. Residents of these nations must go through the formal visa application process before planning any trip to the Schengen Zone.

Applying for ETIAS: The Steps

Platform: Applications can be initiated either via the official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile application.

Fees: There is a standard application fee of EUR 7, although exemptions are available for certain travellers.

Processing Time: While most applications are swiftly processed within minutes, some might take up to four days. If additional documentation or interviews are required, processing could extend up to 30 days.

Post-application: Once submitted, you’ll receive an email with your unique ETIAS application number – safeguard this for future use. An additional email will inform you of the application’s outcome.

Upon Arrival in Europe

Document Verification: The passport you used for your ETIAS application must be the one you present at the border. Discrepancies might lead to denied boarding or entry.

Final Approval: As previously mentioned, ETIAS is not an automatic green light into Europe. Border officials will make the final decision on your entry based on your travel documents.

Navigating the new travel landscape may seem complex, but preparation and knowledge can simplify the process. Whether you fall into the category that requires an ETIAS, a Schengen visa, or neither, understanding these requirements is essential for smooth travel across Europe. Especially if you’re planning on taking the transformative journey along the Camino de Santiago, staying informed about these changes will make your pilgrimage that much more fulfilling.
