Le Puy Camino Route Map and Distances

The Le Puy Camino, also known as the Via Podiensis, is one of the most famous French routes of the Camino de Santiago. Starting in Le Puy-en-Velay, it runs across southern France before crossing into Spain at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, where it connects with the Camino Francés. Covering about 750 km, it is renowned for its cultural heritage, medieval villages, and stunning natural scenery.

Our Le Puy Camino map shows the full journey from Le Puy-en-Velay through the French countryside to the Pyrenees. With the Le Puy Camino route map, you can see the stages, towns, and distances at a glance, helping you decide how much of this beautiful Camino you’d like to walk.

What is the best season to walk the Le Puy Camino?
The best times to walk the Le Puy Camino are in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), when the weather is mild and the scenery is at its most colourful. Walking in summer is also possible but can be hotter and busier. Our Le Puy Camino route map helps you plan the right stage for the season you choose.
What is the distance and duration of the Le Puy Camino?
The Le Puy Camino route map shows a total distance of about 750 km, which normally takes around 5 weeks to walk. Many pilgrims choose to walk one section at a time. A popular option is to complete one or two weeks at a time, returning later to continue the journey until reaching Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. You will see that the whole route is divided into a more mountainous first half and a flatter second half. So you can choose the sections you feel most comfortable with, although the easiest usually does not bring the most breathtaking views.
What makes the Le Puy Camino unique?
The Le Puy Camino map highlights the unique character of this route. It passes through volcanic landscapes, medieval towns, and some of France’s most beautiful countryside. The Via Podiensis is also dotted with UNESCO World Heritage sites, churches, and Romanesque architecture. Its combination of history, culture, and scenery makes it one of the most rewarding Caminos.
