Camino Frances Map and Distances

The Camino Francés is the most famous of all the Camino routes, stretching nearly 800 km across the heart of Spain. Planning such a journey can feel overwhelming, which is why we’ve created our own Camino map tools — designed to give you clarity and confidence before you set out.

With these tools, you can explore the full French Way map and detailed statistics. See how the route is divided into sections, check the climbs with our elevation map, and even view weather forecasts so you know exactly what to expect on your trip.

After all, we cannot know if a five-hour walk on flat ground feels like “a walk in the park” for you, a manageable challenge, or something that requires significant training — or if another route may be better suited to your expectations. However, you can speak to one of our Camino experts directly and we can help you plan your trip from start to end!

How can the Camino Francés elevation map help me prepare?

One of the biggest challenges on the Camino is managing the climbs and descents. Our elevation map shows you exactly where the major ascents and downhills are along the French Way. The toughest climbs are found when crossing the Pyrenees and again around the León mountains. Keep in mind that even flat terrain can be demanding — for example, the Meseta plateau offers little shade, which can make walking more difficult.

With our elevation map, weather map, and stage breakdown, you can plan your walking days with realistic expectations, choose the best places to rest, and prepare physically for the terrain ahead. These tools are especially helpful for first-time walkers or anyone who wants to avoid unexpected challenges.

What is the typical Camino Francés duration?
The full Camino Francés is nearly 800 km, but most pilgrims choose to walk it in sections. Our typical pre-set trips last 8 days and 7 nights, covering around 100–120 km, which is the distance required to earn the Compostela or pilgrim certificate when starting from Sarria. On the map below, you can see how we’ve divided the Camino Francés into manageable stages. We can also tailor the trip to suit your needs — adjusting the duration or daily distances whenever possible.
What is the best time and season to walk the Camino Francés?
The most popular times to walk the French Way are from April to mid-June and in September, when temperatures are mild and conditions are generally bright and dry. However, the climate can vary a lot across the route, from the Pyrenees to Galicia. To make planning easier, we’ve created a unique Camino Francés weather map, which allows you to click on any point along the route and view the average temperatures (minimum and maximum) and rainfall. While these seasons are ideal, we always say: Don’t let the weather stop you. With the right preparation, equipment and timing management, the Camino can be walked year-round.
Where can I find the Camino Francés map?
At Follow the Camino, we provide detailed Camino Francés maps (see below) for every stage of the journey. Each section is detailed with distances, gradients (ascents and descents), and all the essential information you’ll need to prepare.  We’ve also developed our own difficulty rating system, based on energy consumption, which takes both distance and elevation into account. This means a short but steep uphill section is rated as comparable in difficulty to a long flat stage — again, helping you make an informed decision on whether a route is right for you. And if you’re not sure, we pride ourselves on providing excellent customer service, and our Camino Consultants are always available to guide you in choosing the best itinerary. While we provide some information below, detailed notes are provided after we create your itinerary.
