Explore the Camino del Norte Coastal route

The Camino del Norte Coastal is a beautiful blend of wild Atlantic landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and peaceful moments by the sea. This lesser-known variation of the El Camino pilgrimage route follows Spain’s northern coastline from the Basque Country all the way into Galicia, offering a more scenic and serene experience than its inland counterpart.

While it doesn’t pass through Oviedo like the traditional Northern Way, it makes up for it with dramatic clifftop views, fresh sea breezes, and the gentle rhythm of coastal life. Along the way, you’ll visit iconic cities like San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, and Gijón—each full of unique character, flavour, and charm.

Welcome to the Kingdom of Asturias—the only kingdom from the Iberian Peninsula that resisted the Moorish invasion between the 8th and 15th centuries, preserving its distinct culture and traditions. Whether you’re drawn to the call of the sea or the quiet of small fishing towns, this Camino invites you to slow down, take in the view, and walk with purpose.

What is the Camino del Norte Coastal Route?
The Camino del Norte Coastal Route is a historic and picturesque path that hugs the Atlantic Ocean, tracing the footsteps of early pilgrims who journeyed from northern fishing ports toward Santiago de Compostela. Beginning near the French border in San Sebastián, the trail leads you through vibrant cultural centres like Bilbao and Santander, as well as peaceful seaside towns dotted along the way. Roughly two-thirds of the route is shared with the classic Camino del Norte, but in Avilés, the path veers closer to the shoreline, bringing you deeper into the Asturias region. Near Navia, the path turns inland to cross Galicia’s lush countryside, eventually joining the main Camino route toward Santiago. With its balance of sea, culture, and history, this is a truly memorable stretch of the El Camino pilgrimage route.
How difficult is the Coastal Route?
You don’t need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the Camino del Norte Coastal. Most days involve walking between 20 to 25 km on a mix of well-marked coastal trails, rolling hills, and quiet countryside paths. There are some gentle climbs along the way, but nothing too strenuous. If you’re comfortable walking at your own pace and enjoy being outdoors, you’ll find this route both manageable and advantageous. And if you’d prefer a shorter day or extra rest, we can tailor your itinerary to match your comfort level.
Why walk the Camino del Norte Coastal?
Because this route offers something truly special—unforgettable ocean views, lively northern cities, peaceful fishing villages, and a sense of calm you won’t find on the busier Caminos. It’s perfect for those who want a deeper connection with nature, culture, and themselves. Fewer crowds mean more space to reflect, and each day brings a new kind of beauty—from sunrises over the sea to quiet forest trails. If you’re looking for a Camino that’s rich in charm, scenery, and soul, and that will make your journey stand out from other Camino walkers, the Camino del Norte Coastal may be exactly what you’re seeking.
