Camino de Gran Canaria: A Different Camino de Santiago

Volcanic view Gran Canaria

The Camino de Gran Canaria offers a unique opportunity to experience the spirit of the Camino de Santiago in a very different setting: on an island, surrounded by volcanic landscapes, mountains, and Atlantic views.

This lesser-known Camino crosses Gran Canaria from south to north, finishing at the Church of Santiago in Gáldar. It usually takes 5 to 6 days, with 3 to 4 walking stages, making it a great option for travellers who enjoy active holidays in nature and are looking for something a little different from the mainland routes.

A Great Camino for Winter Walking

One of the biggest advantages of the Camino de Gran Canaria is its mild, year-round climate. While other Camino routes may be affected by cold weather or difficult conditions in winter, this island Camino remains a fantastic option during the off-season.

If you’re dreaming of walking the Camino when much of northern Spain is quieter, or simply looking for a winter-friendly Camino, Gran Canaria is a wonderful alternative.

A Camino Best Walked Together

This is a more demanding and remote Camino, with steep climbs and rugged terrain in some sections. For this reason, the Camino de Gran Canaria is not recommended for solo walkers. It’s best experienced with at least one companion, allowing you to enjoy the route more safely and confidently.

Walking, Nature… and a Bit of Beach Time

One of the joys of this Camino is how easily it can be combined with relaxation and coastal life. After days spent walking through mountains and natural landscapes, you can enjoy:

  • Time on the beach
  • Local Canarian cuisine
  • A slower pace to unwind after your walk

It’s a Camino that blends active travel, nature, and leisure in a very natural way.

Pilgrim Credential and Stamps

Just like on other Camino routes, pilgrims walking the Camino de Gran Canaria receive a pilgrim credential, which can be stamped along the way. Although this route does not grant the Compostela, pilgrims who complete the walk and collect the required stamps can receive a local certificate known as the Jacobea Canaria, recognising their pilgrimage on the island.

The Pilgrim Passport is printable and available in your Client Area, so you can download it before starting your walk.

Is the Camino de Gran Canaria Right for You?

This Camino may be perfect if you:

  • Enjoy challenging walks
  • Love wild, less-travelled routes
  • Prefer walking with a companion
  • Are looking for a winter Camino alternative

If you’re seeking a very social Camino with frequent services and flatter terrain, another route may suit you better, and that’s okay. The Camino de Gran Canaria is all about embracing a different kind of Camino experience.
