We recently had the pleasure of talking to José Lagman, a talented photographer who embarked on the Camino de Invierno with us. His journey, filled with striking landscapes, solitary moments, and endless photo opportunities, brought back insights on walking, life, and the art of capturing moments. Here’s what José had to share about his experience.

What role has walking played in your life?

“Walking is an everyday task. I’ve never bought a personal car, so I’ve always walked and taken public transit. Although I never paid attention to the distance, my mobile health app reports that I walk between 7,000-12,000 steps daily. As I’ve aged, I appreciate that walking is the most practical and accessible exercise, so I walk even more than I need to.”

What captures your imagination most as a photographer?

“For me, it’s a gut feeling. When I meet inspiring people or find myself in an extraordinary place, I instinctively reach for my camera. Often, people, places, and events are captivating on their own, but sometimes, it’s the way they make me feel in that moment that stirs me. I try to capture that fleeting feeling in my photographs.”

What inspired you to walk the Camino?

“I was photographing rugby games in Mexico City when I met a player from A Coruña who spoke about the beauty of Galicia and encouraged me to walk the Camino with my camera. Additionally, Catholic friends and family members urged me to undertake the pilgrimage. After the isolation of pandemic lockdowns, I was ready for an adventure!”

Why did you choose the Camino de Invierno, a lesser-known route?

“I knew I wanted a quieter Camino. Initially, I debated between the Camino Primitivo and Camino Portugués (the Variante Espiritual), both known for fewer pilgrims on the road. But after seeing the statistics, I learned that the Camino de Invierno had only a fraction of the traffic of the Primitivo route, and it was offered by Follow the Camino, so I chose it.”

What did you know about the Camino before, and how did it compare to your expectations?

“I had read books and heard stories, especially from friends who spoke of the Camino with reverence. I watched ‘The Way’ and the series ‘3 Caminos’ during the pandemic, and I knew the Camino was considered life-changing, often set against breath-taking landscapes. Walking the Camino de Invierno for six days, I was struck by the timelessness of it all—the old paths, ancient walls, and secluded chapels. It felt like stepping into history.”

How did you plan your Camino? What challenges did you face before working with Follow the Camino?

“I researched the routes, accommodations, and practical tips like foot care. My biggest concern was managing my luggage since I was traveling from overseas. I couldn’t carry a huge backpack over 100km. When I discovered Follow the Camino online, many of my logistical worries were resolved, and Daniela was extremely helpful, especially as I switched routes before deciding on the Invierno.”

What made the Camino a unique travel experience?

“Walking the Camino de Santiago is unlike an all-inclusive holiday. It’s physically and emotionally intense, with stunning landscapes that fully engage your senses. For those open to it, the Camino can be a deeply spiritual experience, especially in the forest trails, where it feels like an Ignatian silent retreat. The Camino’s rich history, myths, and legends add an almost dreamlike quality.”

Did the Camino provide inspiring scenes for a photographer?

“As a photographer, Galicia couldn’t have offered more beautiful scenery: mountains, rivers, ancient trails, old chapels, and animals of all kinds. There were endless photo opportunities, so many that I had to pace myself or risk not reaching my destination each night. I missed capturing sunrises and sunsets because I needed the rest, but I’ll be sure to try next time.”

Did you find what you were looking for on the Camino?

“For my first solo Camino, I hoped to gain enough experience to organise a group Camino for my friends and family next year. I walked alone, except for a memorable afternoon with a family from Sevilla, and although it was a challenge, I never felt lonely. The Camino provided exactly what I needed, and I look forward to future journeys.”

What advice would you give to others considering the Camino?

“My advice goes beyond the usual tips on footwear and gear. Walk the Camino as you would live your life: carry as little baggage as possible. With minimal weight, you’ll walk steadier, have more energy, and can better appreciate the journey without feeling burdened. In essence, bring only the essentials.”
